Storage

Storing peonies properly is essential for long storage life and the best vase life. Peonies can be stored successfully dry or in water. We store all our peonies dry. Our refrigeration facilities are designed to avoid dehydration. We maintain a very uniform temperature of about 33°F - 34°F. This works very well and has consistently provided high quality and long storage life.

We have had feedback from customers who stored our peonies dry and other customers who stored them in water. Although we can give no guarantees, customers have reported successful storage both ways for up to 4 weeks. Some customers have had very good results with our peonies left in their shipping boxes stored dry in their coolers awaiting a special event. Other customers put our peonies in a solution of professional cut flower food as soon as they were delivered. They had very good results stored at about 45°F. We have visited some of our customers and have seen our yellow herbaceous peonies in excellent condition in a solution of professional cut flower food in a customer’s cooler 30 days after delivery.

Bunches of Mandarin's Coat and Miss America   We have experimented with long-term dry storage with many of our varieties. We have consistently had very good results with high quality blooms and good vase life after 2 - 4 weeks of dry storage for most varieties, including many single and Japanese varieties. In our experience, long-term dry storage is not consistently reliable for Tree Peonies and some single and Japanese varieties, particularly white Japanese varieties. Tree Peonies and white Japanese varieties may not perform well after dry storage exceeding approximately 2 weeks. Our experimental results are intended only to give an idea of what is possible and we cannot guarantee them.

The type of growing season and the weather during harvest also influences storage life and vase life. When the growing season is particularly conducive to vigorous, healthy growth, the flowers tend to be stronger and have a longer storage life and vase life. To control diseases we practice careful sanitation in the field, processing area, and our refrigeration facilities. If temperatures are very high during harvest we take extra steps to cool the flowers rapidly. This quickly slows down metabolism, which helps assure a good storage life and vase life.
