Many of our varieties; particularly single, semi-double, and Japanese herbaceous varieties, and our Tree Peonies; must be picked relatively soft to assure normal development into high quality cut flowers. Therefore, most of these varieties will open and develop very quickly after removal from the cooler. We think this makes them ideal candidates for high-end special events. Not only do these varieties tend to have more exotic colors and flower forms than many well know double varieties, but they also are easier to manage for special events because they do not require several days to develop into first class flowers. We have found that with dry storage at temperatures around 33°F - 34°F even varieties that are picked very soft will store well, perform well, and have a satisfactory vase life.

Some double herbaceous varieties can take from 1 - 3 days at room temperature to fully develop in the vase, but they will still be very effective in arrangements even when they are not fully opened. In our opinion, for most commercial work part of the overall pleasure for the customer purchasing an arrangement comes from watching the expansion and development of the flowers over several days. For special events, where the flowers must look their best for a relatively short interval, the time required for full blossom development must be taken into account before the arrangement can be made.
